HaTichon HaChevrati – The Social High School
What is the Tichon HaChevrati?
The Tichon HaCherati is a high school that was founded in 2013 on the base of vocational school, Deshanim, just outside of Haifa, in Kiryat Ata. The school is now part of the Dror Beiti Chinuch network, which operates within the formal structure of the Educational system in Israel, infused with the spirit of democratic learning and youth empowerment. Rather than focus on grades and tests, the school is based on collective and project-based learning, where students learn together, are encouraged to shape and share their opinions, and are encouraged to not just follow, but to teach and lead each other.
Since then, the school has branched out and another Tichon HaChevrati has been founded in the city of Haifa. While they operate under the same pedagogy, the vocational focuses are different, with the Haifa school having a focus on water and sailing, as well as New Media.
What will you do at the Tichon HaChevrati?
Participants who are working at Tichon HaChevrati will be at the high school for 3-4 days a week, between the two schools (Haifa and Kiryat Ata). Everyday, participants will be responsible over for running an educational workshop or meeting, whether it is a course on sports, art, music, or even a history course on Diaspora Jewry. In addition to these meetings, participants will work with students both on a group and on an individual level, helping them with their English, and making sure they get the attention they need to improve reading, writing and speaking.
Participants will meet weekly with members of the school's English staff, as well as work closely with the homeroom teachers for the students they specifically meet with. With support from the staff, participants will integrate more and more into the school, gaining tools and skills in formal and informal education, and becoming an integral part of the culture and framework.
A message from someone on the staff about their experience:
"At the Tichon HaChevrati, we are able to create a different atmosphere for education. Since we don’t refer to each other as students and teachers, and since we don’t have tests or bells, it doesn’t always feel like coming to “school.” At the same time, there isn’t an aversion to learning. Everywhere you look, there are people deep in conversation and different educational projects in action, whether it’s using math to build benches, learning chemistry through cooking, or working in the ecological garden! We are so excited for you to come work with us here! We can’t wait!”
